Refill vending machines are starting to come to grocery stores near you. These are machines that dispense a variety of different products as refills. You bring in your own container and use the vending machine to fill it up. The first refill vending machines to hit the stores are refills for your fabric conditioner. However, we could soon start to see these types of machines dispensing everything from fruit juice to olive oil to skin care products.

The main goal behind this idea is to help save the earth. If you aren’t buying a new plastic bottle every single time that you need new fabric conditioner or fruit juice then you’re not throwing all of those plastic bottles into the landfills. Refilling your own bottles is a great green idea that could go a long way towards making the earth a nicer place to live.

However there’s a major added benefit which entices consumers and that’s the fact that you could save a lot of money using these new vending machines. The vending machines significantly reduce the cost of packaging for products since there are no plastic jugs to be created and filled. Although the machines themselves cost money the cost is probably a fraction of the ongoing price of product packaging. This savings could be passed on to consumers and everyone would save money.

Interestingly, ASDA actually tried doing this about eight years ago and it didn’t really take off with consumers. There are now five UK stores with fabric conditioner vending machines and the results seem to be a lot better. This could have a lot to do with the fact that saving money is of a lot more importance to grocery shoppers today than it may have been eight years ago. Hopefully the launch will be successful and we’ll see this idea take off.
