A recent report released by marketing services company Valassis shows what we already know: use of vouchers and discount codes has gone up considerably since the start of the recession. The economy has caused people to take a second look at ways to save money and getting great deals using promotional offers is always a smart move.

Although there were many interesting facts included in the report (like the fact that savings went up almost 30% from 2008 to 2009) the most interesting information was about the areas of spending where people are most likely to use vouchers. It goes to figure, then, that these are the areas where people would love to see more discount codes.

The top five categories are:

  1. Medication. This is really no surprise. Medication is expensive and it’s often a necessity. People want to find ways to save money. This includes both prescription and over-the-counter remedies for health problems.
  2. Cereal and other breakfast foods. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. People want to start the day off right. They also want to save money while they’re doing it.
  3. Household cleaners. This is another one of those items that you need to have and it often costs a lot of money. Some frugal people use natural homemade cleaners made from inexpensive ingredients but a lot of people who would like to see more discount codes for these items.
  4. Prepared foods. Anyone who knows how to shop frugally at the grocery store knows that it’s best to stick with fresh foods and stay away from the prepared stuff. However, if there are more good deals on the prepared items then this rule could change.
  5. Hair care. Yet another product that falls into the category of more-or-less necessary and yet often expensive.
Are these the areas of spending that you’d like to see more discount codes issued for?
