It’s just about springtime. Love is in the air. Everyone gets a little bit itchy to enjoy romance at this time of year. We want to get out and about in the sunshine. We want to smile and jump for joy. These things are much more fun to enjoy with a partner. Whether you’ve been married for a long time or are about to start dating again for the first time in a long time, ’tis the season to enjoy some wonderful frugal dates.

Here are 15 great frugal date ideas that are perfect for spring.

  1. Hike to see waterfalls or wildflowers. Springtime is a great time of year to go hiking with someone that you enjoy spending time with. If you live in an area where there are waterfalls nearby then hike to those; they’re gushing after the winter rains. If you live near wildflowers, make a date to go hike to see them as they begin to emerge this new season.
  2. Splash in the puddles or go singing in the rain. There are a lot of sunny days in spring but most places also still get some rain. Embrace it especially if this is the last of it for awhile in your area. Go out together in your rain boots and splash around in the puddles. Dance in the rain with a partner. It’s romantic and it’s free.
  3. Catch a baseball game. Springtime marks the beginning of baseball season. Look around for discount codes or deals on tickets to a local game. If you can’t find any, consider checking out the local college team on practice day or even catching a child’s game at the park. This can be a fun childlike date for you and your partner. Bring your own peanuts and popcorn to save money.
  4. Take a weekend trip. There are many great deals on springtime holidays. Airlines offer Spring Break deals at this time of year which can mean cheap tickets for you to somewhere new. Try to get your romantic weekend in before the rates go up for the summer.
  5. Hang out in the park together. Pick one of the sunny days of spring and just go spend some time with a date at a local park. Swing on the swings. Take pictures of each other acting silly on the monkey bars. Read a book out loud to one another. Get an ice cream sundae and sit in the grass to share it. Take advantage of the fact that the sun is coming out!
  6. Enjoy a spring picnic. Picnics are always among the best frugal romantic dates. They can be very cheap especially if you make your meal from local in-season produce. Springtime is a terrific time to start enjoying these dates.
  7. Spend a day at the local farm. Speaking of local produce, you might want to head to a nearby farm for a fun frugal date. Many farms open their doors in spring and allow you to do some picking of their fruits and vegetables. This can save you money on your produce and is also a really fun way to spend the day. Late spring is usually the best time to enjoy this fun, frugal date.
  8. Camp out in the backyard. The nights are still a little bit chilly but if you’ve got some warm sleeping bags then springtime can be a good time to start camping. Save yourself the trek to a local campsite and just pitch a tent in the backyard. Send the kids to grandma’s for the night so that you can really enjoy this date with your partner.
  9. Look for local student shows. Springtime is the time when students start putting on their various shows at local colleges and high schools. They’ve worked hard all year and they’re ready to show off their artwork, fashions and other creations. This can be a fun date that reminds you of your own college days.
  10. Go to yard sales together. Summer is the real season for yard sales but people do get started pretty much as soon as the weather starts to warm up. To turn this into a fun date, challenge one another to find each other one special gift each throughout the day. Set a cap on the amount of money that the two of you spend on this date. You’ll find creative gift-hunting together to be a fun experience.
  11. See if there’s a free day at the local zoo. The zoo is a really fun springtime date. Kids aren’t out of school yet so it’s not crowded. You can leisurely wander through and enjoy the animals together. It may make you want to enjoy some monkey business of your own! Local gardens and other outdoor museums are other options along these same lines. Look for free days, discount codes and half-price admission options to save money.
  12. Go for a long drive (or bike ride). Roll the windows down or get on your bicycles and embrace the wonderful weather together. This is a great way to get away from that cooped up feeling that winter causes and to rekindle the adventurous romance in your relationship.
  13. Go fishing. Spending the day fishing is a great way to relax together. Springtime is a great time for this activity. Try to borrow fishing gear if you don’t own any so that you don’t end up spending a lot of money. If you have a good pair of friends that might want to come along then this can be a great frugal double date!
  14. Shop for a new plant for the home. We all know that flowers are a key romantic symbol. However they don’t last very long and buying bouquets can be expensive. Why not get a plant that will last for a long time instead? Go shopping together at the start of spring to bring new life into your home.
  15. Take a walking tour together. Many cities offer free walking tours of historic areas and landmarks. Otherwise, just get a map and do some research to create your own cheap tour. Getting to know your area together this way will make you like it even more!
