Low-Cost Community Action: Donate Vouchers to Charity

Did you know that only about 1% of the vouchers that are printed out by manufacturers are actually redeemed? This leaves billions that go un-used. Some savvy community-minded folks are starting to realize that they can do something about this that will help others in their area. Groups are forming that collect vouchers and donate them to families in need of food.

For example, a group in the United States called Volunteers for Coupons for the Commmunity formed recently. They are a network of volunteers that did not have any extra money to give to others but still wanted to give back to their community. They started clipping and collecting vouchers. Some volunteers then went shopping with the limited funds that the organization had from donations. Smart shoppers can buy a large number of groceries at a very low cost using vouchers and other discounts. These shoppers took the time to make those smart purchases using the vouchers clipped by the group.

The food purchased with vouchers can then be donated to local food banks where community citizens in need of food can come to get their needs met. The organization is particularly interested in meeting the needs of people suffering from food insecurity – families who do earn money and buy their own food but can’t make the food stretch all the way until the next paycheck. Through smart voucher donation and shopping, these families can be supplied with food for those last few days before payday.

An added benefit of an organization like this is that it allows the food banks to stock foods that normally aren’t available for the people they help. Governments limit the types of foods that can be purchased using government funding. These organizations can buy what they want with the vouchers and donate it all. This may make for healthier communities.
