Cars are expensive to run

As the cost of petrol continues to rise we seem to have forgotten about the spiralling cost of running a car in the UK, but all is not lost. There are some simple actions which you can take which can save you substantial money on a yearly basis – up to £400 for the average UK driver!

Check out the following facts, figures and ideas :-

Average Travel Each Year

The average driver will travel around 10,000 miles a year and if you take the average miles per gallon as around 35mpg, you will use about 285 gallons of petrol a year.

Cost per gallon £5 x 285 = £1425

Tyre Pressure

The vast majority of cars in the UK are driven with below recommended tyre pressure, and while you may think this does not make a large difference, it does!

Simply by checking your tyre pressure each month you have the potential to save up to 5% a year in fuel costs, resulting in a significant saving. Soft tyres will also wear a lot quicker although it is difficult to quantify this particular cost saving.

Extra fuel spend :- 5% x £1425 = £71
Tyre saving :- Not quantified

Aerodynamics

While the majority of us would not even give the aerodynamics of our car a second thought, even the smallest change such as winding the window down, constant use of air conditioning system and even having a roof rack can make a difference.

Extra Fuel Costs

Constant use of air conditioning system :- 12% x £1425 = £171
Travelling with windows down :- 3% x £1425 = £42
Ever present roof rack :- 1% x £1425 = £14

Regular Servicing

Unknown too many people, the quality of the oil in your engine will start to deteriorate as soon as it is put into your car engine. If you change your oil and oil filter regularly this will very much assist with the efficiency of your car and the cost of travel. When you also add in what should be regular services for your car, the saving can be in the region of 10%.

Regular servicing :- 10% x £1425 = £142

Summary

When you consider the number of small actions which you can take to increase the efficiency of your car, surely it is time for us all to take a closer look?

The basic figures :-

Cost of petrol    £1425

Savings

Correct tyre pressure   £71
Aerodynamics    £227
Regular servicing  £142

Total Savings    £440 (30%)
