Summer is a terrific time to attend concerts. There are huge outdoor concerts that are held around the world thanks to the nice summer weather. Many top bands also tour indoor venues during the summer months. So how do you take advantage of this without spending a fortune on high-priced concert tickets? The following ten tips can help you to save money on getting tickets and enjoy the show.

1. Fill your calendar with free shows. Undoubtedly there are going to be some big summer concerts that you want to attend. However, you should choose only one or two of those. The rest of the summer should be filled with the many free concerts that are available. Do your research to find free shows that appeal to you. You won’t feel like you missed out on the big events of the summer if you fill the season with memories of wonderful concerts that didn’t cost you a thing!

2. Look for deals on the shows that you really want to attend. If you’re going to pay to go to a concert this summer then at least try to get the lowest price on tickets that you can possibly get. Look for discount codes that may be offered by the venue. Check third party auction sites to see if you can get lower cost tickets. Check half price ticket websites to see if they’re offering 2-for-1 deals. Sign up for the concert’s website feed and follow them on Twitter to see if they offer special deals on tickets. It’s worth it to do some comparison shopping and to hold out for the cheapest tickets available for a concert that you want to see.

3. Barter your time for the tickets that you want. Some venues will allow volunteers to get into the concert for free. If you’re willing to take tickets at the door for a few hours, help with setting up the stage, pass out fliers at the event and clean up people’s trash then you might be able to get a free ticket for your time. Alternatively, you may be able to find a website that can get you a free press pass if you write a preview and review of the event. If you work in advertising or other related fields then you might be able to get a ticket in exchange for some help with marketing. Put your own skills to work and talk to the head honcho of the event to see if there’s something that you can barter to get in for free.

4. Buy only the tickets and nothing else. One way to save some serious cash when it comes to summer concerts is to make sure that the only thing that you pay for is the cost of getting in to the concert. Don’t pay the overpriced amounts for food. Don’t buy CDs and concert t-shirts. Just pay for the entertainment. Of course, this can be tough if you aren’t allowed to bring in your own bottled water and it’s an all-day concert but do what you can to keep your costs to a minimum.

5. Attend only local concerts. Traveling to make it to a concert can add a lot of money to the price of the event. There’s the cost of petrol if you’re driving or the cost of a flight if you’re going out of the country. There’s the cost of getting a hotel. There’s the cost of the time it takes to travel. Avoid these extra costs by making sure to only attend concerts in your own local area.

6. Go cheap when attending out-of-town concerts. In some cases, you may find that there just aren’t good concerts where you live. That happens in small towns that don’t see a lot of big concert tour action. In that case, minimize your travel costs as much as possible. Carpool to the show with others. Go couchsurfing to avoid hotel costs. Pack your own food to eat during the trip. Camp out at overnight concerts. And combine this with your other summer travel plans so that you aren’t making extra trips this season.

7. Check your credit card for deals. Did you know that some credit cards offer great deals on event tickets to their cardholders? You can get lower prices on tickets or purchase great pre-sale seats in advance on the credit card. If your credit card offers this, by all means, take advantage of it. It’s even better if the card is a rewards card that gives you cash back for the purchase. Just make sure to pay the balance off right away so that you aren’t charged any interest on the concert tickets.

8. Refuse to make impulse purchases. When you see that your very favorite band of all time is going to be playing in your area there is an urge to immediately buy tickets to the event. This is the way that a lot of people lose money when they don’t have to. You want to hold off when buying big name tickets. Wait for the event to get closer. If it doesn’t sell out, deals may be offered. If it does sell out, secondhand ticket sellers may still offer lower costs. The worst thing that will happen is that you won’t make it to the show and that’s something that you can handle even if it’s disappointing.

9. Make a smart choice about whether or not to buy the wristband. If you’re interested in a multi-day concert event then you’ll have the option of paying for a single day or buying a wristband to the entire event. Think carefully about how much money you’re willing to spend on this concert. If there’s really only one band that you want to see then you don’t need to pay for a wristband. If you want to spend several days at the show and the wristband offers real savings over the cost of the single day, though, then go for it.

10. Consider buying extra tickets and selling them for a profit. This is an iffy endeavor but it’s an option for some events. If you are able to get a good price on four tickets and you can sell three of them for what it cost you to get all four then you’ll get in for free. Read the rules carefully to make sure that this doesn’t violate any legalities of buying the tickets. And know that you may end up losing money if you can’t sell the tickets for the right price.

The bottom line is that you should take your time when buying tickets and make smart choices that put your financial needs ahead of your urge to see the summer’s hottest shows!

Free concerts in the summer are a great way to enjoy some music and save some money. I have experienced what you call “bartering your time for the tickets you want” where I volunteered to sell drinks and got to watch a Sting concert for free. It was a great way to enjoy the show and not spend a dime.

What’s a good third party auction site?
Most years I attend Roskilde (Denmark) w/ my friends, and then we just camp there. For other concert trips, we just use Tripping (tripping.com). We’ve found some pretty cool people to host us that way. If you pull together and all cram into a small car, the petrol costs are still not cheap but are more affordable. Just take my advice and don’t be the first one to get in the back. :)
