If you don’t currently drive a car then the thought of getting one can seem terribly expensive. Between the car itself, maintenance, auto insurance, gas, parking fees and other assorted charges the thought of having to pay for a car when you’re car-less is a bit overwhelming. However, if you already have a car then you probably can’t imagine living with it. A nice happy medium is to own a good car that costs as little as possible and yet to drive it only a limited basis.

If you happen to be in the market for a new car right now then you’re in luck. There are a lot of good affordable cars available that offer great gas mileage and other money-saving perks. Here’s a look at ten such cars that you can buy for under £15,000.

1. Skoda Fabia Greenline II Estate. This car is about to be released in the fall and it’s looking like a really top choice for the frugal driver. Not only does it start at the low price of £13,750 but it’s also got terrific gas mileage at over 80 mpg so you’ll save money on fuel when you use this vehicle throughout the year. It’s one of the best choices for a 2010 release vehicle if you’re buying new and want to stay on the frugal side.

2. Aveo Hatchback. This vehicle is another top choice in the industry right now. It is available brand new at under £9000. The fuel economy on this vehicle isn’t quite as good as the new Skoda but it’s over 50mpg so you’ll still save a lot of money over time with this affordable new car choice.

3. Citroen Nemo Multispace. This car has a funky design which may or may not appeal to you. It’s a small car which is exactly right for some drivers. It is available at a nice low price point of right around £10,000. It gets over 60 mpg fuel economy and has very low tax costs of only about £30 per year so people looking for long-term budget spending on their car will want to consider this option.

4. Citroen Hatchback. If the Nemo Multispace is too funky or too small for you then you might like to consider the larger more normal-looking Citroen hatchback. It’s a little bit pricier (close to £11,000) but it also gets great fuel economy (65+ mpg) and has low annual taxes).

5. Fiat 500 Convertible. If you’re looking for a fun and sporty car that is also affordable and gets good fuel economy then you might want to consider the two-door Fiat 500 convertible. It’s priced at just slightly more than £11,000 and gets over 55 mpg fuel economy.

6. Ford Ka TDCi Diesel Hatchback. This is a small three-door hatchback that offers a combination of small size and roominess at the same time. It’s available for a price of around £10,000. It has terrific fuel economy at around 67 mpg although it should be noted that it runs off of diesel which can vary a lot in price. With low annual taxes, though, it’s another solid frugal new car choice.

7. Honda Jazz. This car isn’t quite as affordable as some of the others on the list. It’s priced around £12,000 and gets around 50mpg so it’ll cost a little more to run throughout the year. However, it’s a nice choice because it has a cool multiple-mode seating system that allows you various seating and storage options in the vehicle.

8. Peugeot Bipper Tippee. Just the name is enough to make you curious about this funky little vehicle, is it not? This car is priced at approximately £10,000. It gets more than 60 mpg fuel economy so it won’t cost you a lot to run over time. If you’re a fan of this auto manufacturer then you’ll appreciate it’s playful approach to design, giving you a car that you enjoy driving without costing you an arm and a leg. Notably, this is also a green car that is known for low emissions.

9. Vauxhall Corsa. The leader in the UK auto industry is Vauxhall and there’s a good reason for that – they make interesting, innovative cars that you can actually afford to drive. The Corsa is a prime example of that. It’s priced around £10,000 and gets more than 50 mpg fuel economy. It’s considered a comfortable, safe vehicle to drive and one that’s good for the earth. Incidentally, the new Meriva from this manufacturer is also a good buy although slightly more pricey.

10. Volkswagen Polo Hatchback. The 3-door hatchback version of this automobile is a good buy at around £10000 but it’s worth it to get the larger 5-door style for just another £1000. This vehicle gets more than 50 mpg fuel economy so it’s right in line with the other autos on the list. What sets this choice apart from the other ones on the list is that it was named the 2010 European Car of the Year as well as the 2010 World Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show.
