People who are interested in being frugal in the home have already stopped using traditional incandescent light bulbs. Most of those people are using compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs) in place of their old bulbs. CFLs are not much more expensive than traditional light bulbs but they’re a lot more energy-efficient, saving you money over time. Unfortunately, CFLs have their downsides (like the fact that they contain toxic mercury which makes them tough to dispose of). They’re rapidly being replaced by a new type of light bulb that the frugal shopper should pay close attention to: the LED light bulb.
What is an LED light bulb?
The LED light bulb uses light-emitting diodes that are placed close together to create lighting for new fixtures. It is considerably more expensive than traditional light bulbs but it still has the potential to save you money over time. Thanks to new technology, LED light bulbs are increasingly available for home lighting.
LED lights are the most energy-efficient lights available
The main reason that the frugal shopper will be interested in choosing LED lights is because of the fact that they save the most money over time. These green lights are about 90% more energy-efficient than traditional florescent lights and also considerably more energy-efficient than even CFLs. If you want to see an immediate decrease in the cost of your monthly energy bills simply replace your bulbs with LEDs.
Infrequent replacement decreases costs further
The energy-efficiency of LED lights is a great money-saver but it’s not the only frugal feature of these popular new lights. Another key thing for the frugal consumer to note is that these light bulbs rarely need to be replaced. For one thing, they are specifically designed to last for approximately one decade so you’ll only need to buy new bulbs about once every ten years. For another thing, these lights are highly durable so in addition to lasting longer in general, these lights are less prone to breakage. And if you do need to replace one of these light bulbs before its time, you’ll be happy to know that LED lights are generally under warranty. In fact, the warranty sometimes lasts as long as five years so there’s a good chance that you won’t need to pay to replace your LED lights even if something does go wrong with them.
Heating costs can decrease with LED lights
One of the things that you’ll notice when you switch to LED lights for the home is that these lights tend to emit more heat than other light bulbs do. This may mean that your home feels warmer when you use these lights. This has the potential to reduce home heating costs if you are willing to turn off your home’s heaters thanks to the increased temperature comfort of the new bulbs.
Use a dimmer with LED lights to decrease costs further
LED lights that are available with a dimmer switch are the best option for frugal home lighting shoppers. Obviously, this can help to easily reduce your home lighting costs by allowing you to use the dimmest lighting that you need at any given time throughout the day. If you already use a dimmer in your home, you’ll be pleased to know that LED dimmers tend to be cheaper than florescent dimmers so you’ll save money on your lighting costs anyway by switching over to LEDs.
Get a grasp on the purpose of one-direction lighting
The main difference between the light from LED lights and the lights from other bulbs is the fact that LED lights are designed to be one-direction lights. This means that they are ideal as task lights and accent lights for any room. Many people make the mistake of spending a lot of money on fancy light fixtures for their desks, kitchen counters and other areas requiring high amounts of focused light. Getting the right light bulbs for these areas can save you a lot of money. LED lights are naturally right for these parts of the home.
Start outside for real savings
If you aren’t sure whether or not you want to commit to trying to save money with LED lights then your best bet is to start by making the switch with your outdoor lights. Outdoor LED lighting is bright so your home will remain safe. However, it tends to be cheaper than the other options available to you for outdoor lighting. You’ll start to see cost savings on your energy bill and may be motivated to fully switch over to the use of LED lights in your home.
Remember LED lights when the holidays roll around
LED light bulbs are appropriate for your home all year round but they’re especially something to keep in mind when the holidays get near. That’s because the choice to use LED holiday lights instead of other types of lighting for Christmas decorations is a choice that can save you a significant sum of money. The fact that the lights are more energy-efficient is what will save you the most money. The fact that these lights will last season after season for up to four decades is another important money-saving fact. And it’s also good to note that LED lights reduce the likelihood of fires and other home holiday damage which ultimately saves you money on potential losses.

LED lights actually emit considerably LESS heat than other lights do. A 60W equivalent LED light (about 7W) emits less than 4 BTU/hr when compared to a 60W incandescent bulb which will emit over 80 BTU/hr. So in fact, you would save on cooling costs in the summer versus heating costs in the winter.
@Brian … Thanks for your comment. It is my understanding that although LED lights do emit less energy than other lights, they still emit more heat due to the fact that a majority of the electricity in LED lights is converted into heat rather than into light (~80% to heat vs. 20% to light). I will do more research into this and update the article accordingly. – KathrynV
