Football is the biggest game in the world, which inevitably means that there is a lot of money involved – but how much? Here we look at a breakdown of the top clubs’ revenue for the 2008/2009 season.

Football Money League: How Much Revenue Do The Top Teams Make?

The big upset seems to be Manchester United, who were clearly ahead of Barcelona for the previous two years, and Real Madrid, who continue to dominate the money league by a massive margin despite both their relatively poor attendance and performance.

However, the most fascinating aspect of this infographic is when you compare the clubs’ success against the revenue. For example, even though Real Madrid had a revenue €35.5m larger than Barcelona, they still managed to finish second to them in La Liga by a deficit of nine points, and were knocked out in the first stage of the UEFA Champions League whilst Barcelona went on to win (and secure the first treble in Spanish football history.)

So, what about the future? Barcelona were the biggest mover in terms of revenue growth, which isn’t too hard to understand given their stunning performance, but does this mean that they’re set to be the first club to take the revenue crown from Real Madrid since the 2003/2004 season?
