Almost everyone I know now owns a mobile phone. Even the people who hated the idea at first have had to admit a mobile is pretty darn useful if you’re running late, broken down or stuck up a tree with a crocodile at the bottom of it.

It’s certainly good to talk, but it’s less good to receive an enormous phone bill at the end of the month. Here are five quick ways to slash your mobile bill today…

1. Overhaul your existing plan

First, try to get yourself onto a cheaper payment plan. If you’re coming to the end of your contract, you’re in an excellent position to haggle with your current provider.

Hunt down the best deal on the market, then ask your provider to better it. If it refuses, take your business elsewhere! The chances are the ‘customer retention’ department will crank into gear, and you’ll get a great new deal without the hassle of actually switching.

If you’re tied into your contract for several more months, there are still things you can do. Several providers now allow you to ‘downgrade’ to cheaper payment plans while still under contract, so ask yours what the options are.

2. Make money from your old handset

Do you have any spare handsets lying around? There are now several online companies, including Envirofone and Mopay, that are dedicated to recycling your old phones for cash.

You find your handset on the site, and see how much it’s worth. You then send them the phone (in packaging provided by them) and wait for your cash!

Strictly speaking, this is money making rather than money saving – so make sure you put the extra cash towards paying your next phone bill!

3. Ditch pricy insurance

The insurance sold with mobile phones is generally overpriced and full of exclusions. To save money, cancel your policy and make sure your phone is fully covered under the ‘personal possessions’ section of your home insurance policy instead.

Just make sure it’s insured when it’s outside your home as well as inside it. That way, you’ll knock pounds off your bill and still get the cover you need.

4. Free directory enquiries

Calling standard directory enquiries numbers from a mobile can be an extremely pricy business.

If you have free mobile internet usage included in your deal, you can find numbers for nothing using sites like Yell and 118.

5. Free internet calling

You can already use Skype software to phone over the internet for free from your home phone. And earlier this year, Nokia announced it would be including Skype in its new phones.

That means mobile users with these phones should be able to make free calls over the internet, too. Yey!
