The use of mobile coupons is relatively new but it is rapidly becoming a favorite way for shoppers to save money. This trend could increase now that smartphone applications are emerging which allow people to get on-demand, location-based coupons delivered to their mobile devices. A new business called Coupious has started beta testing of this service and the response so far has been a positive one.

Coupious is a phone application that can be downloaded by both iPhone and Android phone users. The application makes use of the phone’s built-in GPS technology to determine where you are when you are interested in shopping. The application then allows you to browse through available mobile coupons that are relevant for use at the stores in the nearby area. Customer select the coupon that they want to use, click a button that reads “use now” and then show the information to the clerk at the store to redeem their discounts.

One of the major concerns that people have had about this is the concern that there will be confusion when trying to redeem the coupons. There have been a lot of problems with the redemption of eCoupons in the recent past. Coupious has identified that this could be an issue and has put a plan in place to do extensive employee training for all businesses that agree to offer coupons through the service. This should make it simple for mobile customers to make use of these coupons.

The rollout for this particular business is planned slowly. There is some beta-testing happening in U.S. cities now. However, if all goes well, the company plans to expand. They also hope to make their application available to users of Blackberry, WinMo and Palm Pre smartphones before the end of the year. It is likely that other on-demand, location-based mobile coupon businesses will also enter the market to compete in this growing niche of the coupon industry.
