Summer vacations are expensive. Even budget travel requires people to dip into their savings accounts a little bit to be able to afford the trip. Most people simply accept this as a part of life. It doesn’t have to be. Smart travelers can actually find ways to turn their summer vacations into money-making opportunities. Some people manage to actually make a profit during their travels. At the very least, doing this offsets the cost of the vacation.
Here’s a look at ten ways that you might turn your summer travel into cash:
1. Write about your travels. A lot of people think that their travels are not worth writing about because they aren’t visiting exotic locations. However people’s travel tales are a source of great entertainment to others no matter what the destination may be. The mishaps that you go through, the people that you meet and the unique perspective that you have on a common destination can all be interesting to others. You can write a single article for a magazine or even author an entire book on your travels and make a bit of cash on the sales of your writing. If you get very familiar with an area then you may be able to author a travel guide. It’s not necessarily easy to break into the business of writing but it’s do-able if you put in some effort and it’s a really rewarding way to turn your travels into a money-making venture.
2. Blog about your vacation experiences. People who do like to write but who don’t have the ambition to write a whole book may want to think about doing a little bit of travel blogging to earn some extra cash. If you create a blog that offers great travel tips based on your own experiences then you can generate a little bit of revenue through advertising or even asking for donations from your readers. Plus this is a fun way to keep track of your travels.
3. Sell your vacation photos. Many of us are inspired to take out our cameras and to take a lot of pictures when we’re traveling since we’re seeing things that are out of the norm for us. These pictures can be turned into cash with just a little bit of effort. Photos can be sold online through microstock or stock photography sites. They can also be sold as framed art prints or as printed cards depending on how interested you are in developing your skills as a photographer.
4. Create other art around your travels. If you are at all artistically inclined then you can use your travels to create art which you can sell. You may pick up affordable new beads for making unique jewelry or paint landscapes of a destination to sell online. You may make your own crafts to sell through an online storefront like Etsy and can even create entire lines of those crafts around a specific destination that you’ve visited. (For example, you may make handmade soaps inspired by the natural plant life of a place that you have traveled.)
5. Open your own online souvenir store. If you travel on a regular basis then you can make a business out of purchasing souvenirs from different locations and selling them through an online storefront. To do this, you would visit local arts and crafts fairs and stores where locals make handmade items. The goal would be to get unique local items. You could purchase them and re-sell them online through your store. Alternatively, you could network with these locals and have them place their items in your online storefront on consignment which would reduce your start-up costs for this type of business.
6. Open an antique store. Another storefront option is to pick up antiques along the way during your travels and to fix them up and re-sell them back at home. This could be an online store but is particularly ideal for people who want to open a small physical store in their hometowns. Vacations are more fun because you’re looking around at flea markets, yard sales and antique stores to find treasures that you can’t find back home. Then you take them home and make a profit.
7. Bring homemade items to sell during vacation. Buying items on vacation and selling them upon return is a popular way to make money from travels but the reverse is also possible. You can make or buy items that are unique to your home and bring them with you on a trip. You can then set up a booth at a local market or have your own sidewalk sale during your vacation. People at your vacation destination may be interested in buying things that are unique to the area because they come from where you live. This is a great option if you’re visiting relatives because you can probably host a yard sale at their home and their friends may all want to buy from you.
8. Learn a skill that you can use in your work when you get home. Turning your vacation into cash doesn’t necessarily mean buying or creating something that you can sell. Instead, it might mean learning a skill that can earn you more money when you’re back home. Many people are starting to take educational vacations during which they take a class while they’re away. Culinary skills and performance art classes are all popular options but you can learn almost anything on your trip and use it once you’re back at home. Foreign languages are a great thing to pick up on a trip and they often benefit people in varied job positions.
9. Teach or do other work while you’re on vacation. You can also just plan to earn money on your vacation so that you’re not losing money when you’re away from home. Many people teach classes in a foreign country but it’s also possible to pick up a variety of different odd jobs to have some cash during your travels. This option is best for people who are planning an extended vacation but of course it can be combined with some of these other ideas to make even more money!
10. Use your vacation to re-focus on frugal living. Finally, you may just want to use your vacation as a bit of downtime to really re-focus on your financial priorities. We often get so wrapped up in our lives that we stop having any fresh ideas about how to make or save money. Travel allows us to get our minds clear. We may be able to see new ways to save money and to live frugally. In this way, merely enjoying your vacation could actually result in having more money after you get back home.
