Save Money, Bin the Home Phone

Trash the old home phone

All of us have phones at home and many of us also have mobile phones. However, the home phone is not cheap. Just the basic monthly bill is around $30, in the UK it is usually £10 to £15 for line rental, and that is before you have even made any calls. One of the ways to save money is getting rid of the home phone. Use a mobile phone instead. This will instantly save you the basic $30. Mobile phones come with a lot more packages and plans that are much cheaper than the basic home phone. The mobile phones allow you to send text messages, listen to music, they function as cameras and you can even play games.

The days of the home phone are numbered because they are expensive to run. And if you are a home person and need a phone, you can always use your internet to make free phone calls.

For the person who is never at home and always out or at work, having a home phone does not make economical sense. For these individuals, the cell phone should be the primary phone.

And always check your basic home phone bill. Phone companies always tag on additional charges for which you have no idea or services that you never use. And many times, there are phone bills for calls which you never made, so check your bill now! You might be surprised what you find.

Yes I agree about the cost of home phone lines
BUT I am not in a cabled area so have to have ADSL Broadband. Also, mobiles are great in cities but not in less urbanised areas. Where I live you have to go to a window and point towards the arial in the Minster tower. No phone calls after dark when the ionosphere closes in as you cant get a signal! No way can you run your life or a business like that. And don’t the phone companies know this!

It’s a fair, if not pretty obvious, money-saving idea…no-one ever calls my home phone these days so it’s main purpose is completely redundant – the only people who call me on it want to sell me something.

However, I can’t get rid of it as my Sky multi-room subscription means that both boxes MUST be connected to a telephone line in order to verify the location of the boxes (ie. to ensure that I haven’t given a box to a friend so that they can enjoy the multi-room discount).

It’s fair enough to Sky that they have to do this but I hope they will find another way of verifying the location of a box – it’s not the customers’ fault that their technology isn’t capable of doing this on it’s own.

Telephone lines are completely redundant these days, even for the internet – I use Virgin Media’s cable network for my telephone and internet service and it’s far quicker than any ADSL service can ever be so maybe in a few years when everywhere is “fibred-up” the telegraph polls can finally be pulled down.
