In-Store Coupons Flood Store, Create Problems

Making too many coupons available to customers can be a big mistake for small stores. There have been several cases lately in which too many customers have shown up for a coupon promotion deal and stores have had massive problems as a result. The problem is that everyone is trying to take advantage of good coupon deals these days because of the recession. Too many people print out or clip out these coupons and then show up all at once to the place of business. The workers can’t handle the increase in business, there’s a traffic jam of people waiting to get their coupon deal and tempers tend to flare.

The most widely-publicized case of this was the KFC debacle that happened earlier this year. Oprah announced a coupon deal for KFC’s new grilled chicken. So many of her viewers tried to get this coupon deal that KFC stores everywhere ran out of the product trying to meet their needs. People got angry. KFC has had to work hard to issue new raincheck coupons to make people happy after the big problem.

A less drastic, but more recent example, is the case of Rainbow Groceries in San Francisco, California. This business offers a twenty percent off coupon that is good on certain days of the week. On those days, the entire store is packed with people trying to save a little bit of money. The parking lot is full. The lines are long. And customers end up frustrated by the experience of shopping at the store even though they’re glad to be saving money. It’s a mess.

This is just one more example of why we’re starting to see a shift away from the use of in-store coupons and towards a preference for online shopping with discount codes. You simply don’t get the same kind of traffic jam online that you have to deal with when trying to cash in an in-store coupon deal that everyone else wants in on too.
