A recent study has shown that 8.9 million households in the United States receive their coupons via either email or text message. This is only about eight percent of the U.S. population but it’s still a large (and growing) number of people. It also doesn’t take into account the number of people who use online coupon codes or the number of people elsewhere in the world who are using SMS or email coupons. What this translates to is that there are many millions of people using modern methods of couponing! And yet there’s still a lot of room for growth in this industry.

What this study found was that there are some common characteristics of today’s mobile coupon (or email coupon) users which may be common across the world. Those characteristics include:

• Youth. These modern methods of receiving coupons tend to be most acceptable to young people. People who use these modern coupons tend to be in their late teens and early twenties.
• Female. The majority of the people who use these coupons are female which is probably true of almost all types of coupon use.
• Educated. It turns out that it’s the smart people who are using coupons. More than half of the people who use mobile / email coupons are people who have graduated from a 4-year college program.

This suggests that although a lot of people are now using these types of coupons, there’s also a lot of room for growth here. New generations as well as older generations, the male population and less-educated individuals are all people who could benefit from learning to use modern coupons. As the mobile coupon business grows, we’re likely to see growth in these sectors of the industry.
