How much money, on average, do you spend on groceries for your family? If someone told you that it was possible to spend less than ₤3 per week on groceries, would you believe them? What if they said that this amount goes to feed a full family of six as well as their pets? A recent report from The Boston Channel profiles a woman who has managed to do just that.
Kathy Spencer says that the average amount of money that she spends on groceries weekly is approximately $4 (or less than ₤3). This money goes to feed her, her husband and their four children. It also pays to make sure that their five pets (two cats, a dog and a rabbit) are all fed weekly. Here are some of the tips that this coupon queen says work for her:
• She buys everything in bulk. (There are pros and cons to buying in bulk but she buys smart and makes it work.)
• She buys items only when they are on sale. This increases the amount of money that she saves when she is buying things in bulk.
• She always uses coupons. If you’re buying a bulk item that’s on sale and you also use a coupon then you’re going to get some serious savings. Spencer gets her coupons from manufacturer websites, grocery stores and newspapers. She’d probably save even more if she started to use coupon codes as well!
• She looks for rebates. Spencer says that she gets a lot of items completely for free by using mail-in rebates.
• She invests time into the process. Between looking for coupons and doing her shopping it takes Spencer about five hours per week to get her groceries. Still, if you can get your whole family’s weekly groceries for less than ₤3 then it’s probably a good use of your time.
