How to Improve Mobile Voucher Codes

Written by Kathryn on November 17, 2009

Mobile promotional codes are growing in popularity. These are voucher codes that you receive or access on your mobile phone. You can give the mobile phone to the merchant at check-out. The cashier either inputs the discount code number into their computing system or scans a barcode on your mobile phone screen. Either way, you receive an automatic discount when shopping. This is a great way to increase your savings if you’re someone who shops in local stores as well as online. However there are drawbacks to modern mobile coupon technology. It needs to be improved if it’s going to really take off. Some companies, like ViVOtech, are working hard to make those improvements.

ViVOtech is a leader in the area of Near Field Communcations (NFC). Also known as contactless payments, this term refers to the ability to swipe a phone at a machine at the point of sale to make it easy to use the phone to make mobile payments. The company is currently using this technology to improve the use of discount codes that are retrieved via the mobile phone. They have just created a new sticker which can be added to any mobile phone to make it useful for redeeming vouchers on site.

One of the biggest problems hindering the development of this type of voucher technology today has been that the process of redemption tends to slow down the customer line. It takes time for the cashier to enter the discount code or swipe the barcode on the phone. When you use a sticker like this one that’s being launched, you swipe the phone yourself similar to how you would enter your own credit card at the point of sale to complete a transaction. This speeds up the process of redeeming the vouchers so that you don’t slow down your shopping when you’re using these codes.

ViVOtech is also making it possible for merchants to encourage customer loyalty using their new stickers. This could result in bigger savings for customers of certain stores. That’s because the stickers make it possible to bundle a customer loyalty program with a mobile phone voucher. This would automatically show the customer what other discounts they qualified for in the store for being such a loyal customer. For example, if you frequent the same grocery store all of the time then you would receive mobile vouchers for that store. At the store, you could scan your sticker on a digital device and find out what new discounts were available to you. This emerging technology isn’t widespread yet but it’s definitely a trend we’re going to see with voucher codes in the future.
