Valentine’s Day is approaching. Most people are going to do something special. Hopefully you’ve thought of a way to do something nice for your sweetheart without spending a lot of money. After all, this is certainly a holiday that you don’t want to skip (unless you want to end up in the doghouse) but you also shouldn’t blow the family budget trying to make it special.
Apparently not everyone realizes that, though. There are people out there who are willing to spend a whole lot of money on fancy items for Valentine’s Day. These things may sound luxurious and they’ll certainly make your significant other ooh and aah (before she faints at the money that you spent on them) but they’re absolutely a waste of money. It’s just not worth it to spend this kind of cash on a Valentine’s Day gift.
Here’s a look at ten crazily expensive Valentine’s gifts that someone (hopefully not you!) will be buying this month:
- Weekend getaway at Ynyshir Hall in Wales. This two-night getaway at a romantic Wales hotel is being advertised a great holiday for Valentine’s Day but is it worth it? You do get a deluxe double room in a nice hotel along with breakfast, tea, a hamper of food and even one dinner. You also get a cookery demonstration. But you’re going to pay £1,500 for the two nights at the hotel alone. That doesn’t include the cost of anything else that you might do while you’re there or even the expense of getting there. It would surely be an unforgettable experience but it’s not worth the cost. What you have to remember is that there are very few memories worth creating at this price. Those that are should be reserved for very special occasions like golden wedding anniversaries!
- $10000 Proposal Martini. Would you pay over £6000 for a martini for your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day? What if we told you that the martini comes with an engagement ring in it? Hopefully your answer would still be no. Although this is a romantic gesture, a ring that costs that much just isn’t worth it for most reasonable couples. Nevertheless, this is something that is enticing to a few folks out there. It’s a deal that’s being offered as a Valentine’s treat by the Algonquin Hotel in New York City. At least you get a drink with your fortune-costing ring.
- World’s Most Expensive Perfumes. If you have somehow been able to justify in your mind spending that kind of money on a ring then maybe you would also think about getting one of the world’s most expensive fragrances. For example, Clive Christian came out with a signature scent last year that cost $215,000 (~£137000) for a single five-ounce bottle. In fairness, it was a limited edition scent and it did come in a Baccarat crystal bottle with a diamond inside. Still, for how long would this gift last or feel special? Even if you saved that bottle there’s no way it’s worth the cost. Imagine all of the smaller romantic gestures you could make throughout the year if you had that kind of money to spend!
- World’s Oldest and Most Expensive Valentine’s Day Card. There is a Valentine’s Day card that is worth over £4000. At least this one has some sort of value to it; it’s the oldest Valentine’s Day card known to exist in the world and it dates back to the eighteenth century. If you’re into collectibles then this is kind of neat. However it’s not really neat enough to justify spending that much money on it for Valentine’s Day, is it? This one actually isn’t even for sale because it’s owned and housed at the British Postal Museum but it’s one example of collectible items that people might want to waste their money on for Valentine’s Day.
- Dinner at Levantine in Dubai. Frugal-minded folks already know that you should skip dinner out on Valentine’s Day. The restaurants are packed and the menus are pricey. Plus it’s not as though the memory of dinner ever lasts as long as it takes to pay off the credit card bill that you paid for it with. Nevertheless, a lot of people do go out for dinner on Valentine’s Day and some of them spend quite a bit of money. One example is folks who want to have dinner at Levantine restaurant in Dubai. It costs over £220 to enjoy this Lebanese dinner under the stars. Of course, that’s not as bad as the Valentine’s dinner offered in Singapore last year for over £6000. See these five most expensive restaurants in the world for other places to avoid!
- iPhone 3G Supreme Rose. It would be sweet to get an iPhone for your darling for Valentine’s Day right? But you would want it to be special so of course you would have to get the most expensive phone in the world. It costs a whopping £1,930,000. It’s platinum and diamonds and rose gold and it comes with a wallet made from the foot of an ostrich. That sounds worth it right? Wrong. For the discount-minded high-end shopper there’s always the £59,995.00 rose gold iPod instead.
- Victoria’s Secret Diamond Bra. Every year Victoria’s Secret comes out with a special edition diamond bra. In 2008 it cost $5 million. Perhaps due to the recession they lowered the 2009 price to just $3 million. Who knows what they’ll have for 2010? It’s definitely worth it to invest in high-quality sexy lingerie since this is the type of item where you get more for your money when you pay for quality but something at this end of the price spectrum is just absurd!
- Chanel Bicycle. It goes without saying that it’s not worth it to buy your sweetheart a car for Valentine’s Day. (Well, it should anyway, although a surprising number of men do buy luxury cars for their darlings on this special day.) But what about a bike? That’s affordable and it’s useful and it’s even green right? Sure, unless you’re getting the Chanel bicycle which costs over £7500.
- Fendi 24-carat Gold Bag. There are a few items out there that are almost never worth what you pay for them. Fancy 24-carat gold jewelry is one of those things. Ludicrously expensive handbags are another. And yet there are people who do believe that these are must-have items. And for the guy who wants to spoil the girl who feels this way it’s possible to combine the two by purchasing the a gold Fendi bag for just a little bit over £22000. You might as well give her a no-limit credit card to go with it!
- Anything on Jim Trippon’s Valentine’s Day gift list. Every year this guy comes out with a list of luxury Valentine’s Day items that read like a how-to guide for folks with too much money to show off their wastefulness. He includes things like castles that are for sale, luxury yachts that you can buy and the type of jewelry that has no business even being made.
Someone out there is buying these things for Valentine’s Day. Can you imagine?

People who actually give these gifts doesn’t have to care about the worth, they would be enormously rich.
