Shopping for a new digital camera can be daunting; there’s so many models from which to choose, and with all of the new features, it’s hard for the casual photographer to decide what type is best.
I’m in that position now, after using the same little Casio pocket camera for nearly five years. I’ve taken it everywhere from India to Disney World, but now it’s starting to slow down and sometimes doesn’t switch on properly. If you’re searching for a new camera as well, this week’s Friday Find will focus on three great compact digitals under £120.
For a good basic camera under £100, the Sony Cybershot DSC-W550 definitely fits the bill, especially if you want to give it to a teen or child as a gift. A friend of mine owns this camera and it does the job for quick point-and-shoot action, and it’s also really slim and portable. Even though it’s quite inexpensive, this 14.5 megapixel camera has some nice features such as panoramic mode and a large screen. If you’re looking to take loads of videos, the quality isn’t the greatest, but if still photos are all you want this camera to do, it’s a fantastic and affordable option. Find it at Comet for £79.
If you’re serious about your sun holidays or just spend a lot of time by the water, this 12 megapixel GE waterproof digital camera from Maplin will help you take perfect snaps without worrying about your camera getting wet. For £119.99, it won’t break your budget and is slim and lightweight enough to pop into your pocket or bag whilst at the pool, on a canoe trip or playing in the sea (it’s waterproof up to 5m). If you need your camera straight away, Maplin offers a “Shutl” service which means you could get your camera as soon as 90 minutes!
Fun colours always catch my eye, but the camera itself has to tick all of the boxes as well. This 16 megapixel Canon Powershot A3300IS comes in pink, perfect for the girly girls, plus it has loads of features like an image stabiliser, five times optical zoom and a large three-inch screen to view your snapshots. It’s on sale for £119.95 right now at Jessops (originally £149.95) with free next day delivery.
