Today I stumble upon a webpage with the title “Wikipedia Coupon Codes – all coupons, discounts and promo codes for en.wikipedia.org”, as well all know Wikipedia is non-profit making company, which is completely free so there will never be a need for a coupon code. The site which has built the page is the famous Retailmenot.com, and the page in questions is here: http://www.retailmenot.com/view/en.wikipedia.org (I’m not going to link to them becuase they dont deserve a link for such dodgy tactics)

Clearly, they are automatically creating pages for all the top sites without even thinking about it. No wonder they can say on their homepage “Find coupons for more than 20,000 stores”. Anyone can create 20,000 pages, but its not very ethical to create pages for merchants who will never offer coupons. On the offending page there is a message which says “Sorry for the inconvenience but this merchant has specifically requested to have all user contributed coupons removed from the RetailMeNot system.” Which is good but Retailmenot should simply remove the page altogether, but they haven’t.

Not only do they have they have one page about Wikipedia but they are targetting other Wikipedia sites too:

  • http://www.retailmenot.com/view/tr.wikipedia.org
  • http://www.retailmenot.com/view/en.wikipedia.org

Come on Retailmenot you are big enough and rich enough not to have to resort to such dodgy tactics.
