    South West Trains can mail your tickets to you, or you may obtain them at a self-service ticket machine at a station of your choice. Tick the option you prefer, choose a station (if applicable), and click “Continue.” Go over the details of your journey. If satisfied, check the Terms and Conditions box and click “Proceed to Payment.

  9. Enter credit card and billing address

    Complete the payment form as directed, and click “Buy Tickets” when finished. You’re done! Simply pick up your tickets from the machine at the station, or expect them in the mail.

Advance fares

Pay the lowest price possible by booking your train tickets in advance. Advance fares go on sale around 12 weeks before travel, so if you get in early, not only will you be able to take advantage of the best prices, but you’ll also benefit from the greatest choice of journeys, times and dates. You can still buy advance tickets up to 23:59 on the day before travel, if available. So even if you’re travelling tomorrow, it’s still worth checking online for advance fares if you want to save.

Group discounts

If you’re travelling in a group of 3-9 people, you can save up to 34% when you select the ‘GroupSave’ option under the ‘Railcards and other discounts’ drop-down list when booking your tickets online. If you’re travelling in a group of ten or more people, you can benefit from discounts of up to 26% when you book a ‘Group Travel’ ticket and travel on ‘Off Peak’ or ‘Super Off Peak’ times.


Frequent travellers who ride on South West Trains could make huge savings by purchasing a Railcard instead of buying individual tickets for each journey. There are discounted railcards for: senior citizens over 60, young people aged between 16 and 25, people with disabilities, adults who always travel in pairs, travellers who journey within the Network Railcard Area and families of at least one adult and one child. Each Railcard is valid for selected standard and first class tickets and comes with a saving of up to 34% for adults and 60% for children, where applicable. All Railcards are available to buy for £30 for one year and some are also available to buy for £70 for three years year – except the Disabled Persons Railcard which costs £20 per year and £54 per three years. If you’re sure you’re going to get enough use out of it, you’re best off choosing a three-year Railcard if you want to get best value for money.

Season tickets

However, if you frequently travel between just two stations, it might work out cheaper if you buy a season ticket. Season tickets are available to buy in batches of seven days, one month and any time period between one and 12 months. The 12 month season ticket works out best value and gets you 52 weeks of travel for the price of 40 – that’s a saving of almost 25%.
