An interesting concept for sure, 09 Jan 2012Review by SaraI wasn't quite sure what Wimdu was all about, but luckily they had a whole video on their page explaining it. Really this is fantastic if you're one of those travellers who loves to meet new people or 'live like a local.' Anyone can go on and rent out one of their rooms for people to stay in, although it does say they're all quality checked first. Whilst I thought it was a great idea - see the prices, as they are loads cheaper than hotels - my husband isn't the sort who is into staying in a stranger's home. I showed him the site and he agreed it was a cool concept, but not for him - so we went and booked our hotel in Prague.
When my friend decided we should visit Paris for a minibreak, I went straight to Wimdu and found a fantastic apartment. There were loads of options on the site, so it took a while to sort thru them all, but the reviews helped, as well as the photos. Our hosts were lovely, and they even cooked us breakfast in the mornings! We had our own room, which was a good size, and the location was brilliant - just a few minutes walk from the Eiffel Tower. We've been back for a few weeks and still keeping in touch with our hosts via Facebook. Maybe I'll even convince my husband to go.... -
Used Wimdu on a trip to New York, really loved it!, 09 Jan 2012Review by HollieM44I used Wimdu when I was travelling around the world on a 8 month trip. I reached New York about midway through my trip and I was already short on money. I was on my own and couldn't really handle another hostel having just finished a 3 month stint in Australia, so I splashed out a bit and booked an apartment in Queens through Wimdu. At first I was a bit worried, staying in someone elses house kind of scared me, though I don't know why I was worried as the owner of the apartment was out of town, hence why she was letting it out. I must say it was kind of a comfort to stay somewhere that felt a bit like home instead of just another impersonal bed in another room packed full of people. The flat was beautiful and full of lovely little homely touches you'd expect from someone's home. I had a wonderful stay.
I stayed for a week and it cost me about £40 per night. Pricey in comparison to a hostel, yes, but in comparison to a hotel it was mere pennies. If I was to go to the states again for a holiday or short stay I would definitely use Wimdu again as you get an experience totally different to the one you would have in a hotel on Times Square. I'm thinking of using Wimdu for a trip to Barcelona I have planned later this year too. A great service - I really recommend it.
