I don’t really agree with the proposed iTunes alternatives. Those other sites are just ways to discover new music not programs that allow you to manage an entire music library or sync it with your mobile device. Those are the types of alternatives to iTunes I would have liked to have seen.

I have a fondness for Open source/free software.

I love programming in Python, I use WordPress for my blog but…

There are a few things I have not been able to replace with free SW.

I use windows 7 because it is much better than any open source solution (for me. I have used Ubuntu, Redhat, MAcOS – I just like Windows much better for what I do
I use Mindjet Mindmanager 9 (free alternatives are not as good)

I use Maya 2011 and Adobe Creative suite 5. Expensive but there are no open source replacements that are nearly as good (again, my opinion. I have used Blender and Gimp – they just don’t cut it for me)

I use MS Office 2010 (OpenOffice just does not cut it)

Time is more valuable than money. I pay for my software because it saves me time and helps me work much more effectively.

The BBC iPlayer is at least free and does have a great deal of good content.
If you believe the BBC licence fee to be a rip off you ought to study what advertising has done to TV in other countries. At least we get some quality for our few pence a day.

  23. 7

    September 27th, 2010

Might want to add COMODO to the security section.

  24. 6

    September 26th, 2010

Unfortunately BBC iPlayer is not an alternative to having a UK TV license. Unfortunately, you still need to pay the rip off license fee if you wish to watch television online.

  25. 5

    September 25th, 2010

Decent list, but a bit misleading in some places. TOR is a proxy server that makes it difficult for websites to track your actions online. It has nothing to do with anti-virus, and does nothing to protect your computer from any sort of attack. TOR is a great program but in no way is it an “alternative” to Norton or any other anti-virus software.

Spybot is also an excellent program, but also not an alternative to Norton. Norton Anti-Virus targets viruses, a very specific type of malware. Spybot targets spyware, which is very different from malware.

TrueCrypt does not “encrypt software”, it encrypts data stored on a hard drive. Very big difference here.

Many of the code editors you mention are also wonderful programs, but are not an alternative to Dreamweaver. As the user above stated, Dreamweaver gives you a visual interface with which to create websites. It does also function as a manual text editor, but a mediocre one at best, and only supports a few file types. Editors like Notepad++ support a large number of programming languages, but is purely a text editor – there is no drag and drop interface for building web pages. Dreamweaver has its place and editors have their place, but they are not the same. They are built for different types of users and it has little to do with cost.

Again, a nice list, but some more research would have helped with accuracy.

  26. 4

    September 25th, 2010

Buhahahah is correct. NotePad++ is not an alternative to DreamWeaver as a WYSIWYG web deign application. Neither are QuantaPlus or Aptana, unless you mean alternative in the same way a bicycle is an alternative to a to a train?. NetBeans is something completely different again.

To suggest using either Spybot Search and Destroy or TOR as an alternative to an Anti-Virus is an act of insanity.
    Strange website you got here.

  27. 3

    September 24th, 2010

    1. Notepad++ as an alternative to Dreamweaver?
    Excuse me?

Dreamweaver is a what-you-see-is-what-you-get editor when notepad++ is for coding. That’s rather not the same, right?

(and not, i don’t use dreamweaver)

    2. haiku??? come on, get real:

“Haiku is an open source desktop operating system currently under development”

Under development, it is still even not beta! How can you advise sth like that for just users?

  28. 2

    September 23rd, 2010

I already use many of them. Sometimes I find the free alternatives to be better than the paid ones in many ways.

Great list. Thanks for the time you spent building this.

  29. 1

Impressive list! I think paying for good software is important but if you can make do with a free alternative and support the company through referals and positive word of mouth then that’s ok too. I’d check out another software called 1DayLater which offers a way of tracking time, money and mileage, and invoicing clients easily
