About Debenhams
Debenhams is a UK department store chain with franchises in other countries. It was founded in 1818 in London and now has over nineteen thousand employees along with 2007 revenue of £1.7 Billion and over ten million square feet of space currently utilized for retail sales. It is large enough to have a listing on the London Stock Exchange. Originally called 'Debenham & Freebody' and located at 33 Wigmore Street in London, the company evolved through the acquisition of other department stores by then-chairman Ernest Debenham. The original site now houses the communication department and press office for the entire chain. Becoming part of the Burton group in 1985 the company became independent again in 1998. Debenhams now has over one hundred and forty stores in the UK and Ireland and was taken over by a private consortium in 2003.
Products and Services
Listed as a public limited company, Debenhams sells primarily clothing lines, household goods, and cosmetics. The company was believed to be rather dated in the mid-nineties but corrected that misperception with the its latest creation, the 'Designers at Debenhams' line. That move kept affordable prices while bringing in big-name fashion talent, and once again put the company on the fast track to success. To help bring customers into the store, Debenhams also offers the 'Debenhams Wedding Gift Service' so guests will have some ideas as to what to buy a couple who is about to get married. Goods from the store can be bought in the store, on the Internet, or over the phone, and can be delivered to the customer. A personal shopper is also available.
Our Review
Debenhams participated with many other large UK retailers in the Nectar Loyalty Card program until February of 2008 when it offered a £15 voucher code coupon to be used at any of its stores in place of honouring the card any longer. There was some criticism of this, but the overall response was positive. Having the wedding service and the personal shopper available by appointment is a nice touch, and the company is also involved in a trial of 'Desire by Debenhams,' which is designed to give the female consumer a boutique-like experience. Going to promotionalcodes.org.uk may get you a discount code or promotional code that you can use. Some of the offers can give you free delivery or money off. While Debenhams has much to offer, there are also some problems with the management of the stores, mostly with their return policy and their online shopping. There has been some difficulty in the past regarding returning merchandise purchased online to one of the retail stores. However, most of the people who work at Debenhams are polite and will do what they can to be helpful regardless of the situation, so we give them 4 out of 5.
