Lonely Planet Customer Reviews

Higher prices than my local shops

I've bought plenty of guidebooks from Lonely Planet in my local bookshop but when they didn't have the Egypt guide I wanted, I went straight to the Lonely Planet site. I quickly found it by clicking on the map and added the guide to my cart, but the book was at least a few pounds more than I'd normally pay at my local shop (where they frequently run sales). At least I had a voucher code so in the end I wound up paying just a bit more after you factor in shipping.

Great site for getting all kinds of information

This site looks and feels just like the travel books, only here I can get lots of background information and history about destinations for free, and I can look for actual holidays by searching for flights and hotels. It’s a one-stop shop place for planning any trip, and I love it. It helps me feel really well informed before I travel. I’m off to Canada next month, and I’ve just been reading about all the wildlife there. This site offers lovely imagery from around the world and is full of well-written articles on travel-related topics. Check it out.

Nice resource for planning a holiday or gap year

I'm helping my daughter plan her gap year, and Lonely Planet has been brilliant. Very informative articles and safety tips which a parent can certainly appreciate, info on the cultures etc. can all be found online and I enjoy reading up on the different destinations. I ordered several travel guides here, as we don't live close to any bookshops that carry the ones we needed, one of the downsides of being out in the country. The books are fantastic and I have to say put my mind at ease about her travelling everywhere if she is armed with knowledge. My husband and I are actually joining her in South Africa at one point, so it was nice to be able to plan our holiday as well. Thanks!

Shopping Tips for Lonely Planet

Offers and deals for you

Special offers

Get more bang for your buck by shopping in the ‘Special offers’ section of the Lonely Planet website. Here you’ll find a collection of all the latest deals and discounts, such as £1 guide ebooks, three-for-two multi-buy offers and discounted digital chapters. This section has so many great deals that it’s definitely worth checking out. Even if you already know what you want to buy, a good multi-buy promo might just spur you to buy an extra guidebook and get better value for money.

Free delivery

Whenever you spend more than £25 on the Lonely Planet website, your order will be delivered free of charge via standard delivery which takes 2-5 working days to arrive in the UK. Orders less than this come with a delivery charge dependant on how many books you’re ordering. So if you want best value for money and you love to travel, you should think about stocking up and buying several travel guides so that your order adds up to £25+ and qualifies for free delivery.

Multi-buy promotions

One of the most common promotions you’ll see on the Lonely Planet website is the multi-buy deal. When available, this deal can be found in the ‘Special offers’ section of the website and it’s usually valid on all individual travel guide purchases (digital and paperback), but not bundles nor products available to pre-order. You usually can’t combine this promotion with any other special offer or discount code and you can only use it up to 20 times within a single order. As is custom, you’ll always get the cheapest guide for free, so try and purchase three guides of roughly the same value, so you get best value for money.

Extra money saving tips

Subscribe to the newsletter

Before you make your next purchase with Lonely Planet, make sure you sign up for the newsletter. When you subscribe, you’ll shortly receive a discount code you can use to save 20% on your next order. Not only that, but by signing up, you’ll also receive regular emails from Lonely Planet with travel inspiration and advice, announcements about new guide books available and reminders about the latest money saving special offers. Buy the digital version

If you own an eReader, you’ll save a fair bit of cash by downloading the digital versions of Lonely Planet’s guides, instead of the paperback versions. On average, digital editions are 25-30% cheaper than the paperback editions – this could transform into some serious savings if you frequently buy Lonely Planet travel guides. Not only will you save yourself money, but you won’t have to lug around numerous guidebooks with you on your travels, either, since you can store as many of them as you like in your eReader!
