Shopping Tips for South West Trains

Offers and Deals for You

2-for-1 London Offers

Whenever you book your tickets to travel to London with South West Trains online, you can take advantage of loads of 2-for-1 London offers. These offers range from meals out at all kinds of restaurants and tickets for internationally-acclaimed theatre shows to entries to famous museums and family-friendly attractions. To claim on the offer, book your tickets to London online, buy your voucher through the 2-for-1 London page on the South West Trains website and present your train ticket along with the voucher at the attraction or restaurant in London.

Advance Fares

Pay the lowest price possible by booking your train tickets in advance. Advance fares go on sale around 12 weeks ahead of time, so if you get in early, not only will you be able to get the best prices, but you’ll also benefit from the greatest choice of journeys, times and dates. You can still buy advance tickets up to 23:59 on the day before travel, if they’re available. So even if you’re travelling tomorrow, it’s still worth checking online for advance fares if you want to save.

Small Group Discounts

If you’re travelling in a group of 3-9 people, you can save up to 34% when you select the Group Save option under the ‘Railcards and other discounts’ drop-down list when booking your tickets online. If you’re travelling in a large group of 10+, you can benefit from discounts of up to 26% when you book a Group Travel ticket and travel on ‘Off Peak’ or ‘Super Off Peak’ times. Bizarrely, the big group discount is smaller than the small group discount. So if you’re travelling in a group of 10+, your best bet is to book several Group Save tickets, instead of Group Travel tickets.

If you’re always travelling with South West Trains, you could make some huge savings by purchasing a Railcard instead of buying individual tickets for each journey. There are discounted railcards for senior citizens over 60, young people aged 16-25, people with disabilities, adults who always travel in pairs, travellers who journey within the Network Railcard Area and families of at least one adult and one child. Each Railcard is valid for selected standard and first class tickets and comes with a saving of up to 34% for adults and 60% for children. All Railcards are available to buy for £30 for one year and some are also available to buy for £70 for three years, except the Disabled Persons Railcard which costs £20 per year and £54 per three years. If you’re sure you’re going to get enough use out of it, you’re best off choosing a three-year Railcard if you want to get best value for money.

Season Tickets

However, if you frequently travel between just two stations, it might work out cheaper if you buy a season ticket. Season tickets are available to buy in weekly or monthly batches. The 12 month season ticket works out best value and gets you 52 weeks of travel for the price of 40 – that’s a saving of almost 25%.
