Eating Sensibly Is Cheaper Than Dieting

Written by Kathryn on August 30, 2010

Many people struggle with body image issues and issues about their weight. That’s why diets are so popular. A lot of people realize that fad diets probably aren’t going to work for them in the long run. Nevertheless, they choose to try them out because they’re desperate to lose weight. Frugal people can benefit from keeping in mind that a sensible diet is not only a healthier way to lose weight and keep it off but also a cheaper approach to weight loss than dieting is.

Dieting is expensive

Some of the costs associated with both fad diets and long-standing popular diets include:

- Expensive personalized meals. Many diets come with required meal plans. You have to pay for the food and sometimes it can be really pricey.

- Membership fees. Some of the most popular diets require that you pay membership fees just to join.

- Use of protein shakes, protein bars, etc. Diets that rely on these types of special foods are diets that require you

7 Conflict Minerals That Cost People Their Lives … And What You Can Do About It

Written by Kathryn on August 19, 2010

Thanks to a popular movie and a lot of media coverage, most of us are now familiar with so-called blood diamonds. However, diamonds are not the only minerals that are obtained from war-torn places like The Democratic Republic of Congo. There are many other minerals that come out of these types of places. These minerals cost more than just the money we pay for them; they cost people their lives.

Here’s a look at seven conflict minerals that are worth avoiding if you have a social conscience:

1. Gold. Many people around the world have stopped purchasing diamond jewelry out of concern that the diamonds are coming from environments dominated by insurgency, torture and death. However, gold jewelry (and the gold used in other items) may be just as much of a problem. It has been reported that 90% or more of the gold coming out of the Democratic Republic of Congo is undeclared gold that is tied to the same type of horrible conflicts that we are familiar with because of blood diamonds.

2. Wolframite. You may not know what this mineral is but there’s a good chance that you’ve handled it. That’s because this mineral is commonly used to create the vibration function in

This is the number one thing that you must learn if you’re going to live frugally. It definitely applies to back-to-school shopping. Figuring out how much money you actually have to spend will allow you to use it wisely to purchase the most important back-to-school supplies first.

2. Buy back-to-school clothing that can be worn throughout the year. Many parents get lured in to getting their kids the trendiest seasonal outfits so that they’ll fit in at school. Ultimate Guide to Saving Money with LED Lights

Written by Kathryn on August 4, 2010

People who are interested in being frugal in the home have already stopped using traditional incandescent light bulbs. Most of those people are using compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs) in place of their old bulbs. CFLs are not much more expensive than traditional light bulbs but they’re a lot more energy-efficient, saving you money over time. Unfortunately, CFLs have their downsides (like the fact that they contain toxic mercury which makes them tough to dispose of). They’re rapidly being replaced by a new type of light bulb that the frugal shopper should pay close attention to: the LED light bulb.

What is an LED light bulb?

The LED light bulb uses light-emitting diodes that are placed close together to create lighting for new fixtures. It is considerably more expensive than traditional light bulbs but it still has the potential to save you money over time. Thanks to new technology, LED light bulbs are increasingly available for home lighting.

LED lights are the most energy-efficient lights available

The main reason that the frugal shopper will be interested in choosing LED lights is

Youngsters More Into Saving Money Than Parents

Written by Kathryn on July 28, 2010

Teenagers and twenty-somethings have a bad reputation when it comes to saving money. We think of them as too young to have knowledge of the money management skills that they need to engage in serious savings. Combined with the fact that they aren’t yet established enough in the work place to earn a high wage, it’s easy to write off these youngsters as low on the ladder of saving money. However, a new survey indicates that this isn’t true. In fact, it appears that people in their late teens and early twenties are actually better at saving than are the people of their parents’ generation!

The survey found that twice as many of the younger folks were regularly putting money into a savings account as were people in their forties (one out of five teens compared to one out of ten older adults). Two thirds of today’s youngsters started putting money into a savings account before they turned twenty whereas less than half of the older adults surveyed started saving money at a young age. And one out of every five youngsters aims to save at least £3,000 per year compared to only one out of every seven older adults who want to meet that same goal.

What’s really interesting about this is that the older generation is the one that raised the younger generation. Perhaps they managed to teach them some terrific money-saving skills at a young age even if the parents themselves aren’t in the financial position to do the same type of savings. This theory is supported by the fact that the younger adults surveyed were more likely to say that they learned savings habits from their parents than their parents were about the kids’ grandparents. This suggests that money-saving will continue to be passed down to the next generation and things will continue to improve as these teens get older!

Why Men Will Use Discount Codes Instead of In-Store Vouchers

Written by Kathryn on July 23, 2010

Men don’t want to cut out voucher coupons. Sure, they want to get a good deal on their purchases just like women do but they are far less likely to take the time to hunt down and use physical vouchers. In fact, one study says that fewer than one out of every five grocery store shoppers who used a voucher in a one year period were men. The things that inhibit guys from using regular vouchers may not be as much of a problem with online discount codes.

Some of the reasons that men don’t bother cutting out vouchers and taking them to the store include:

  • They don’t want to have to cut them out. It seems like a little thing to most women who can easily multi-task the process while talking on the phone or doing other activities but guys say that it’s too much of a hassle. A printable voucher, or better yet a promotional code that you just have to type in, is preferable.
  • Men don’t remember to take vouchers to the store with them. Then they have to remember to use them once they get to the checkout counter. Women toss vouchers in their person or have some organized ability to remember to take the vouchers along. Most guys forget so why bother cutting them out in the first place? This isn’t a problem with discount codes which can be used as soon as they are located.
  • Guys don’t want to have to think ahead when doing their shopping. Again, this isn’t an issue when shopping online with promotional codes. You can impulse buy and still get that deal.
  • Men may be embarrassed about trying to save money. Even in modern times, guys are expected to be breadwinners and they may not want strangers to know that they need to be frugal. This isn’t a problem when you’re shopping anonymously online with discount codes.

Although most men still aren’t using in-store vouchers, those who have started to do so are interested in continuing. More than ninety percent of the men who began using them during the recession plan to keep up their use. These guys may also want to use promotional codes to get further savings.

Guide to Saving Money on Personal Watercraft this Summer

Written by Kathryn on July 21, 2010

It’s summertime and it’s hot. One great way to cool off while enjoying your summer is to head out on the water. Lakes, rivers and oceans all offer terrific scenic, adventurous ways to stay cool when the temperatures start to climb. Most people who hit the water this summer will be swimming or fishing. But a lucky few are going to be in boats and on jet skis. Think that you can’t afford to enjoy time on a personal watercraft this summer? Think again. This guide can help you figure out how to save money while having fun on the water.

Money-Saving Tips for Renting Personal Watercraft

Most of us don’t own a boat and don’t plan to buy one this year. However, we can enjoy the opportunity to get out on the water in one by renting a boat this summer. Here are some tips for saving money on a boat rental or renting other watercraft:

  • Rent a boat with a group. If you want to save money on renting a boat then your best bet is to get a group to join in on the rental. The individual cost per person obviously drops when there are more people chipping in.
  • Take as little extra weight on the boat as possible. The more weight there is on the boat, the worst fuel mileage you’ll get and fueling up your boat rental is pricey. Don’t bring lots of extras – just the people and the must-haves. If your boat seems to have a lot of extras already on it, ask about unloading them before you take the boat out on the water.
  • Pay for gas for a friend’s boat. Do you know someone who owns a boat? You can save money on your own rental by going out on the water with them and just paying for the

Can The Queen Apply Her Frugal Ways to the Civil List?

Written by Kathryn on July 12, 2010

Each year The Queen receives a sum of £7.9 million to be allocated as funds for the Civil List which pays her staff’s salaries, administrative needs and various other expenses. That amount has been the same since 1990; it was reviewed in 2000 but was not increased at that time due to a surplus of £35 million still available from the previous decade. The Queen has consistently needed to spend more each year, delving in to that surplus so that it is now almost gone. Although this year was supposed to be the year that a new annual sum could be negotiated, The Queen has agreed to accept a one-year freeze on the issue due to the impossible financial straights that the UK is in at this time.

The Queen is notorious for being personally frugal. There are tales here and there about her turning off lights to save money, taking normal passenger trains instead of more expensive public transportation and preferring used clothes to new ones. Will she be able to apply these frugal ways to reducing the cost of spending on The Civil List? With the freeze in place and not much money left in the surplus, she may not have a choice.

The one thing that The Queen has always been very vocal about is that she wants her staff to get a fair salary for the work that
