A woman recently passed away at the ripe old age of 100 years old. In her will, she left her money to Lake Forest College, the school that she had attended as a young girl. On its face, this isn’t a very interesting story. However, there’s a twist. The amount that the woman left to her college was over £4.5 million ($7 million). What’s really interesting about this is that nobody who knew her was aware of the fact that this woman was a millionaire.
The reason that nobody knew that Grace Groner was a millionaire was because she live an extraordinarily frugal life. The home that she lived in was comfortable but it was small and certainly not flashy in any way. What about her car? She didn’t have one; she chose to walk instead of driving. She even wore used clothes instead of purchasing new ones. There was nothing about the woman that said that she was a millionaire because she simply never spent her money.
In fact, it was her frugality that allowed this amount of money to accrue. Groner had made a very small stock

This most recent recession has been worse than the others that we’ve experienced since The Great Depression. The good news about this is that it appears to be causing a shift in attitude, values and spending habits which could last even after the recession comes to an end. The way we eat, entertain ourselves, think about spending and decide what has value has all changed in recent years.
Here is a look at ten key attitude shifts that have taken place over the past two years as a direct result of what has been dubbed The Great Recession:
- People want to spend less. Per capita spending has decreased over the past two years, the first time that this has occurred since The Great Depression. Low-income women, in particular, are spending less but this attitude that we must spend less than before pervades all different socio-economic groups.
- Frugal behavior is now the norm. A few short years ago it was considered “alternative” to live

Are you a PC person or do you own a Mac? If you prefer your PC then there’s a good chance that you think that Macs are too expensive to purchase. That’s true if you only look at the outright cost of a Mac compared to a PC. However, it can be argued that investing in a Mac is going to save you money in the long run.
Here are 5 reasons that switching to Mac is a frugal decision:
- Macs last longer. One of the things that you have to consider when making a frugal purchase is how long it’s going to last you. Buying a product that has a good price but doesn’t last very long isn’t a cost-effective shopping decision. In general, Macs last longer than PCs.
