Were you one of those smart people who got all of your Christmas shopping done early this year? Did you get started about a month ago and use discount codes to make sure that you got the best prices on all of the things that you wanted to give to others this year? If so then you must have been in the minority because most people seemed to be out this past weekend getting their holiday shopping done last minute. Over £5 billion was spent this weekend alone by people getting their last minute Christmas gifts.
Saturday was being called Panic Saturday since so many shoppers were out trying to get their hands on the gifts that they failed to buy earlier in the season. Over 15 million people were shopping on High Street on Saturday and spending a total of more than £3 billion. The number didn’t decrease much on Sunday. And it’s actually expected that another £1 billion of last-minute gifts will be bought on Wednesday of this week. These prices indicate that people are spending approximately ten percent more on Christmas shopping this year than they did last year.
It is possible that not all of this shopping was actually for Christmas alone. Many people are aware of the fact that the sales tax (VAT) is about to rise again so it is possible that they were choosing to buy their own big ticket items as well before that tax goes up. If you are planning to purchase any big items in the year to come then you might want to think about finding some voucher codes and getting the best deal before January 1st when that tax increase takes place.
And if you are one of those people who plans to head out on Wednesday to get even more last minute gifts then you will want to implement some smart shopping tips before you go. Make a list of what you want to buy and don’t get sucked into any impulse purchases just because you’re in a rush. Make sure to go online and print out any discount codes for stores that you will be shopping at. And remember that it really is the thought that counts!
