The school holidays are whizzing by, and at the start the thought of a whole six weeks to fill with entertaining activities seemed like an impossible mission.

With not long left to go, the unenviable task of kitting the kids out ready for school begins, and with only a small budget it can prove to be a real challenge. But there are ways to get everything you need without breaking the bank.

Retailers such as Aldi and Lidl and also Pep & Co are now part of Poundland and have budget price school uniform that’s really affordable. Although you won’t get school specific items, you can pick up all the basics such as socks, trousers, skirts, shorts, shirts, and even jumpers for less than £10. Basic items for PE kits can be picked up too.

When it comes to shoes, not everyone can afford a £40 top notch pair, but there are still plenty of places to get a quality set within your budget.

When my son started primary school last year I didn’t want to pay an extortionate amount as I didn’t know how long they would actually last, so I started out with a pair from Asda that cost me just £13, and to my surprise they lasted the whole school yet. Despite a few scrapes and scuffs, the seams didn’t come apart at all and the soles stayed intact – overall, they were a very well-made pair of shoes.

It’s always worth taking a look at local selling pages on Facebook, you will be surprised by the amount of school uniform posts you see and it’s a great way to pick up uniform that’s perfectly wearable for next to no money.

Check your local charity shops for school specific items as parents will often donate old uniform in good condition so it’s worth checking.
Something my sons school did this year on the last day of school, was put out all the unclaimed lost property (which was a big pile of items). They then put a sign on it saying ‘help yourself to anything’ and whatever wasn’t taken was donated to charity shops. I noticed that a few parents were apprehensive about taking a look, but all of the clothes were fine and it really helps out if you are on a budget.
